    IDEAL NITROMO Medium Term High Protein 35% Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass, Tetraploid, 40% Hybrid Ryegrass, Tetraploid, 25% Intermediate Red Clover

    Why are more farmers returning to RED CLOVER mixtures?

    There are a growing number of farmers now seeking to reduce the cost of production by using less fertiliser and by reducing the amount of purchased feed. It is predicted that many dairy, beef and sheep farmers will choose to grow high clover leys and adopt a lower cost production system. High Red clover leys require little or no nitrogen fertiliser and provide an excellent source of protein. Whilst there are many benefits from clover leys.

    Why Red clover?

    Red clover grown in forage seed mixtures offer a cheap alternative to nitrogen fertiliser and provides a homegrown source of protein. Clover plants are able to extract nitrogen from the air, which itself is three quarters nitrogen, indirectly into the soil via bacteria in nodules on plan roots. There are also concerns about the effects of increasing diesel costs which affect the very application of fertiliser itself. Coupled with this is the burden of record keeping and even the disposal of polypropylene and plastic bags. Finally, NVZ regulations mean that grass farmers will be restricted by a further reduction of 30kgN per hectare.

    Digestibility and palatability

    Clovers are more digestible than grass and this is one reason why livestock perform well when fed clover. Clovers are extremely palatable to sheep and cattle. This is important as it enables productive animals to consume more forage. More forage intake with a high protein content leads to greater live weight gain and milk yields. Red clover is for silage This has a high yield of around 15t DM/ha and is most commonly used for silage production. It is an upright plant which can yield up to 30% more than white clover. Red clover leys are cut for silage at the end of May. Two or three more cuts follow throughout the summer and autumn. It is sown in leys to last between 2-4 year’s, Idealseed GLOBAL & PAVO red Clovers will last the full 4 years. Red clover silage has a crude protein content of 16% to 20% and a ME content of 10 to 12MJ/kg DM Store/fat lambs can be fattened very effectively on red clover silage. Note: High in Phyto-oestrogen, breeding sheep should be kept off for six weeks Download full PDF fact sheet

    Agricultural Mixture Selector

    Agricultural Mixture selector

    I-DS “a cut above the rest in 2019”

    What makes Idealseed forage grass seed mixtures extra special is the FACT that all of our varieties are sourced by science-based research and highly recommended first choice for 2019 by “NIAB” National Institute of Agricultural Botany (England & Wales) and “SRUC” Scotland’s Rural College.
    Idealseed is the only on-line company with all forage varieties recommended as 1st choice NIAB &SRUC.

    Grass and clover breeding programmes are constantly improving the overall yields and quality of varieties available to the farmer. Each year new varieties that have shown an improvement within UK National Trials come on to the market. A variety can enter the UK National List if it performs particularly well in one region of the UK. However, these varieties may, or may not, perform as well under the extreme weather conditions encountered in Scotland or the difference in climatic conditions in England & Wales where regional disease risks vary considerably.
    Ground Cover & Winterhardiness are essential characteristics for I-DS

    Maintaining a good ground cover indicates the ability of a variety to survive and contribute to total yield. The trial ratings are based on measurement of both persistency (change in ground cover from establishment year onwards) and overall sward density.
    Winterhardiness

    Winterhardiness is an important characteristic in hill and upland areas, where winter damage is most common among the ryegrasses; other species may also be affected but to a lesser degree. There is a marked variation in varietal susceptibility and care should be taken in selection of varieties for areas where winter damage is prevalent.
    Disease

    Disease severity is very dependent on overall climate in different areas of the country, some diseases are more prevalent in the generally wetter and warmer west and south west, while others are more common in the drier east. In some areas, multiple diseases can be high risk.
    Examples being (most susceptible areas):

    Rynchosporium = Southwest England/Wales

    Drechslera = Northwest England/Wales

    Ryegrass mosaic virus = East England

    Crown rust = Southeast England
    I-DS grasses must meet our selection criteria: Exceptional Palatability & Outstanding Yield
